Karen Cano, Coutin School Principal

Message from the Principal

Coutin School is a private Non-Public School (NPS), located in the west San Fernando Valley. We are dedicated to providing a personalized education for our students who have special learning and emotional needs.

We promote effective communicators and problem solvers who will become productive individuals and independent thinkers in the communities in which they live and serve.

We achieve our mission through small classroom size, individualized attention, excellent teaching, skilled support staff, and a therapeutic component to help students deal with their emotional needs.

Academics at Coutin are in alignment with California State standards and the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) “A-G” standards, which are necessary to meet graduation requirements. We offer upper math and science, foreign language, English literature, history, and physical education, as well as a variety of electives including art, ceramics, consumer math, digital yearbook, drama, and psychology.

Once students have completed the necessary classes, diplomas are issued through LAUSD or the student’s home charter school. Students can expect a senior year very much like their public school counterparts. We offer Grad Night, Prom and a wonderful graduation ceremony to culminate our students’ high school experience.

Many of our students go on to Community College and have achieved great success. We also encourage our current students to enroll at their local community college and take a college class while still enrolled in high school to help them prepare for their futures.

Coutin School is proud of its academic rigor, as we watch our students grow through their achievements.

Thank you,
Karen Cano, Principal

TESTIMONIAL

"After our first meeting with Gordon (the Dean), we met the staff, visited the classrooms, we discussed what we were looking for and what my daughters’ difficulties were… we knew this was exactly what we were looking for."

COVID-19 Safety Guidelines for Coutin School

Introduction

As COVID-19 continues to spread, the health and well-being of our Coutin students, staff, families and community are of utmost importance. We are depending on the guidance of public health professionals who are the experts in protecting the community during disease outbreaks. This is a difficult time and there are no easy answers as every day presents new dilemmas; therefore, we are doing our best to provide up-to-date information, at a time when details change quickly. While the
long-term outlook of the coronavirus pandemic is still highly uncertain, learning communities are having to adapt to new procedures in order to be able to work effectively while attempting to keep their members safe and healthy. This handbook was prepared to answer many of the questions that you may have and to provide specific information about certain policies and procedures. This handbook contains important information that you should know, become familiar with and keep available for frequent reference. If you have any questions that are not addressed in this handbook, you are encouraged to talk to your immediate supervisor. This handbook has been prepared to inform you of the best practices that will occur at Coutin School. The sources of information include, but are not limited to, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, various local, state, and federal agencies, and the Los Angeles Unified School District. The guidelines and procedures in this handbook may be altered, modified, changed, or eliminated at any time, with or without notice.

While being on the campus of Coutin School, social distancing must be practiced and face coverings worn at all times to reduce the risks of exposure to COVID-19. Because COVID-19 is extremely contagious and is spread mainly from person-to-person contact, Coutin School has put in place preventative measures to reduce the spread of COVID-19. However, Coutin School cannot guarantee that its employees, volunteers, visitors, or others in attendance will not become infected with COVID-19.

This document (Daily Health Screening) is printed and posted at the entrance to the school. This is a form for all employees (and visitors) to sign (or initial) with the date if they are able to answer “no” to all the questions. Any answers of “yes,” will prevent this person from being on campus. PLEASE CLICK ON LINK FOR MORE INFORMATION. COVID-19 Safety Guidelines for Coutin School Staff
